Understanding Fax Transmission Speeds
Understanding Fax Transmission Speeds
When discussing fax transmission speeds with clients, it's important to understand how the baud rate affects the time it takes to send and receive faxes. This knowledge can help set realistic expectations for sending large faxes.
Average Transmission Times
The table below shows the average time it takes to transmit a single page based on the baud rate of the sending and receiving fax lines.

Please note that these are average times not including graphics. Actual transmission times may vary.
Baud Rate | Inbound Minutes per Page | Outbound Minutes per Page |
---|
2400 | 2 minutes 30 seconds | 2 minutes 50 seconds |
4800 | 1 minute 45 seconds | 1 minute 50 seconds |
7200 | 1 minute 15 seconds | 1 minute 15 seconds |
9600 | 1 minute | 1 minute |
12000 | 55 seconds | 55 seconds |
14400 | 45 seconds | 45 seconds |
Key Points to Remember
Transmission Speed Adjustment: The transmission speed will adjust to the lower baud rate of the two fax lines. For example, if the sending baud rate is 33600 and the receiving baud rate is 14400, the transmission rate will be 14400 baud.
Large Fax Transmission: A 1-page fax sent at 9600 baud takes an average of 1 minute. Therefore, a 200-page fax with just text sent at 9600 baud will take approximately 200 minutes or 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete.
Understanding these details can help you and your clients better manage expectations when sending large faxes.
